WebMD taps Dr. Mahnaz Rashti, Beverly Hills leading celebrity cosmetic dentist, for world-class expertise in latest publication.
We all want beautiful, healthy teeth. Many people are moving away from traditional bracket-style braces for different options to achieve an award-winning smile and find success with invisible teeth aligners. While traditional braces use wires to move teeth, aligners provide an invisible brace alternative for a more pleasing aesthetic.
According to the Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, she frequently helps patients determine the best treatment course for a confident grin. Though aligners can be an excellent alternative to teeth alignment, Dr. Rashti points out that there are certain cases where clear orthodontic aligners have limitations. If you have large gaps between teeth or large jaws, aligners may not be the ideal solution for your orthodontic needs.
“The aligners are only able to move the teeth about 6 millimeters on the top and the bottom,” Mahnaz Rashti, DDS, a periodontist in Beverly Hills, tells WebMD Connect to Care. “Additionally, they are not able to rotate teeth beyond 20 degrees. This is because the aligners lack the proper strength and push that ordinary metal braces have.”
If there are large gaps between teeth or large jaws, aligners may not be the ideal solution for your orthodontic needs. Other cases aligners can't fix are:
- Jaw Expansion
- Large Gaps and Over-Rotated Teeth
- Impacted Teeth
